Our History

Boss Carpet One Freeport, IL

We joke about how carpet "is in our blood" in the Boss family; however it is no joke! Boss Carpet One has been in the flooring business for 5 generations and has been in Freeport for over a decade.

The first store opened in Dixon, IL in 1981, over 30 years ago, and was owned and managed by John and Julie Boss. Two years later it moved to a new location to accomodate for more inventory. In 1985 a new store was built on Galena Avenue in Dixon, and in 1990 John and Julie hired a salesman to help manage the growth. In 2000, they opened the Freeport, IL location, and in 2003 their Cape Coral, FL location. John and Julie's son Ben Boss is now the owner of the Illinois stores and their son Nick Boss manages the store in Florida.

Further back, John Boss' Great Grandfather, Herman J. Boss was an employee of Marshall Field's & Co. in Chicago, IL., for 53 years as the head of Interior Design. In 1930, his son John H. Boss then followed in his father's footsteps, taking a job as a buyer in the Floor Covering department. One day he purchased the last rug made by the Deltox Company in Wisconsin. They were a braided rug company that was going out of business. John H. Boss inquired about purchasing the machine that made their braided rugs and a fair deal was made. From then on, John H. Boss' entire family fabricated braided rugs by hand and with sewing machines, opening a store in Westmont, IL in 1944. In 1947 they purchased a building from the IC Railroad in Amboy, IL. Here they produced a large quantity of rugs before moving the mill to Hendersonville, North Carolina in 1951.

We are honored to offer you five generations of family dedication, tradition and expertise in the flooring industry.
